About Us

viu:lab is a research group at HAW Hamburg exploring new ways to visualize complex information to empower understanding across different audiences. Our work lies at the intersection of data visualization, human-computer interaction, and data journalism, combining methods from design, cartography, and computational analysis. Through applied research projects and interdisciplinary collaboration, we develop interactive visual approaches that support better sensemaking and more transparent data communication.

Our Mission

Our mission is to make data more interpretable, meaningful, and trustworthy—especially in the presence of uncertainty. We investigate how visualization can not only reveal insights, but also communicate ambiguity, limitations, and alternative perspectives. By designing human-centered visual methods, we aim to support informed decision-making and foster a more critical and reflective engagement with data.

We draw on knowledge and practices from cartography, among other fields, to make visual information more intuitive and understandable. With a strong focus on applications and audiences in data journalism, our work bridges research and practice, combining design, data, and storytelling to turn complexity into insight.
